Solar dos Frades

A House with History in the Heart of Alentejo

In the centre of the village of Ferreira do Alentejo, among quiet streets and golden fields, stands a living testament to time: Solar dos Frades. This guesthouse, now synonymous with hospitality and authenticity, was born from the history and heritage of two noble manor houses.

More than just accommodation, it is a piece of the region’s memory, where every stone, every wall, and every detail tells a centuries-old story.

🏰 A Noble Heritage:

Solar dos Frades is the result of the union of two distinct manor houses, both belonging to the influential Passanha family.

The residence of D. Diogo Maldonado Pessanha, dating from the 18th century, is known for its balanced façade and wrought iron details — symbols of the noble architecture of the time.

The manor house of João Carlos Infante Passanha, built at the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th, emerged during a period of prosperity in Ferreira do Alentejo, driven by viticulture and agriculture.

Both buildings contributed to giving the village a new identity — more urban, elegant, and distinctive — within a traditionally rural Alentejo.on’s memory, where every stone, every wall, and every detail tells a centuries-old story.

🎨 Art and Memory on the Walls

The interior of Solar dos Frades still preserves traces of its aristocratic past. Several rooms feature mural paintings by João Eloy Amaral, who incorporated classical motifs and decorative elements with great aesthetic sensitivity.

These artistic works reveal not only the refined taste of the owners but also the cultural and heritage value of the building.

Each painting is a window to the past, a fragment of a time when art lived side by side with the daily life of the manor house.

The Origin of the Name

📚 From Prison to Boarding School:

During the 20th century, the manor houses took on new purposes. One of the buildings served as a local prison and later as a boys’ boarding school.

It was precisely during this latter phase that the place gained the name by which it is still known today: Solar dos Frades, a tender reference to discipline, education, and the collective memory of those times.

This educational past shaped generations of the village and created an emotional bond between the space and the community, a connection that endures to this day in the identity of Solar dos Frades.

🛠️ From Manor House to Guest Accommodation

At the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, the manor houses were carefully restored, respecting their original design.

This transformation gave rise to the current Solar dos Frades, a guest accommodation space that combines history and comfort, tradition and modernity.

Today, guests can enjoy a stay in a place shaped by time: where the past has not been erased but integrated into the experience.

Every room, every corner, and every corridor keeps alive the essence of a time that is still present.
